Sub-Saharan Africa driving global market for mobile money

Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for more than half of all mobile money deployments worldwide and is pioneering a range of new mobile money use cases. The latest ‘State of Mobile Money in Sub-Saharan Africa’ presentation reveals that the number of live mobile money schemes in the region had reached 140 across 39 countries at the end of last year, accounting for more than half of the 277 mobile money deployments worldwide.

Google to Launch $40 Smartphone in Nigeria

Google is set to launch an affordable mobile device for the Nigerian market- the ICE 2 smartphone. Google ‘s chief executive officer, said, “Yes, Google is set to launch an Android device in September. One cool thing about this device is the price. The Ice 2 would be sold at N13,000 ($40) when it is launched.”

Eaton extends partnership with Rob Mcglees Engineering in Namibia

Windhoek-Eaton announced an extension to their partnership agreement with Rob Mcglees Engineering, making them an authorized service partner across Namibia. This agreement follows Eaton’s longstanding partnership with Rob Mcglees as an authorised distributor of all Eaton UPS related products in Namibia and builds on Eaton’s regional growth strategy and dedication to invest in its partner ecosystem.

Etisalat Digital aims to double market share by 2021

Aiming at a multi-billion-dollar worth digital transformation market, Etisalat launched its "Etisalat Digital" business unit, which it unveiled officially during Gitex technology week 2016. While currently the unit manages to contribute to around 5% of the revenues of Etisalat UAE, the aim is to double the same in the coming 3-4 years.

U.S. Ends Laptop Ban on Flights from Middle East

The United States has ended the ban on large electronics in the cabins of airlines that it announced in March. DHS spokesman David Lapan tweeted Wednesday evening that the restrictions on large electronics had been lifted.

Ooredoo and Al Rabban Hospitality join hands

Al Rabban Hospitality hopes to drive Qatar’s smart hospitality sector, thanks to a partnership announced today with leading ICT provider Ooredoo. Supporting Qatar’s tourism growth, Al Rabban Hospitality, which operates Frasier Suites, has recently completed the installation of 824 high-definition smart TV systems. Ooredoo also installed corporate Internet VPN services so business guests can work securely, and the back-end technology infrastructure that supports full connectivity.

Tigo to further expand network infrastructure

Tigo Tanzania has announced plans to upgrade its network infrastructure. The telecom operator aims to increase coverage, capacity and quality of service for their customers. One of Tigo’s key strategic objectives is to transform broadband customer experience by providing services as per global industry standards in both 3G and 4G technologies.
