Dubai's Healthcare Push

In the past few years, Dubai has been increasingly recognized as the destination of world-class healthcare providers. Indeed, the city holds two healthcare free zones, Dubai Healthcare City (launched in 2002) and Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park (launched in 2010), which have their own regulatory bodies. The healthcare free zones’ mission is to enable high quality integrated healthcare, education, research, and wellness. The objectives under their establishments also include delivering exceptional customer experiences and ultimately impacting every member of the Emirati society. What’s more, Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has unveiled the Dubai Health Sector Strategy 2013-2025 to ensure that the city will feature among the top medical tourism destinations around the world.

Many existing factors could help drive the latter medical tourism initiative. For starters, Dubai has amongst the best tourism infrastructure in the world. In addition to this, 70% of Emirati hospitals are internationally accredited since 88.5% of UAE’s residents are expats. More importantly, the country has a well-regulated medical sector under the parameter of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA). However, in terms of existing infrastructure, the UAE is nonetheless far from meeting World Health Organization’s recommendations.
