Huawei, ZTE to develop high-speed Internet in Algeria

Chinese telecommunications manufacturing giant Huawei on Tuesday signed an agreement with Algerian telecommunications operator Algerie Telecom (AT) to develop very high-speed Internet service, Algeria's state news agency reported. According to Algeria Press Service, the partnership agreement is aimed at deploying optical cabling terminates at homes and companies.

Jamii Telecom, Airtel and Telkom Kenya apply for extension of 4G trial permits

Three companies have applied to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) for extensions to their 4G trial licenses, the Daily Nation reported. The LTE licenses of Jamii Telecom and Airtel Kenya expired before they could launch the services commercially.

Airtel Uganda has launched a 4GLTE mobile telecommunications technology. The upgrade to 4GLTE comes with a significant countrywide investment made by Airtel Uganda in setting up 404 LTE sites in Kampala and 126 sites upcountry.

Nigeria’s Investment in ICT sector hits $70bn – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said that investment in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector has hit 70 billion dollars. According to the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, in 16 years since the Digital Mobile Licences (DML) were issued, investment in the sector has hit about $ 70 billion from a mere $50 million in 2001.

UAE’s AI investments rise by 70 pct in last three years

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), a major oil supplier seeking to transform itself into a digital economy, has seen investments into Artificial Intelligence (AI) growing by 70 percent over the past three years, UAE state news agency WAM reported. The value is projected to reach 33 billion dirhams (nine billion dollars) by the end of 2017, WAM cited the Ministry of Economy in the Gulf state as saying.

Computing giant IBM buys up Israeli start-up Cloudigo

American computer hardware behemoth IBM Watson is buying up Israeli start-up Cloudigo, its founder said on LinkedIn over the Rosh Hashanah holiday weekend. It remains undisclosed how much IBM paid for the Israeli data center company but it is likely to be a multi-million-dollar transaction given the hubbub around the announcement. Neither Cloudigo founder Eran Gampel nor an IBM spokesman would comment on when the deal will be finalized.

Costa Coffee tests drone delivery service in Dubai

Costa Coffee has successfully tested its drone delivery service in Dubai. Following a survey that showed 82% of its UAE customers would like to receive drinks or beverages using the technology, the London-based brand undertook a one-day trial of its ‘coffee-copter' in its Jumeirah Beach Road drive thru store. Orders were made by phone and delivered to beach-goers with 15 minutes, according to the coffeehouse company.

Saudi Arabia set to lift ban on internet calls 

Saudi Arabia will remove its ban on internet phone calls, in a bid to stimulate online business as the kingdom looks to boost non-oil revenue. All online voice and video call services such as Microsoft’s Skype and Facebook’s WhatsApp that satisfy regulatory requirements will become accessible.

Veon's subsidiary Djezzy announced that the reach of its LTE services has improved to 25 percent of the Algerian population. The operator said that it now covers 10 million people across 24 of the country's provinces or wilayas.

Gabon to bring internet and mobile services to 2700 rural villages

Gabon’s telecom regulator Arcep announced the official launch of a new Universal Service program aiming to connect 2,700 villages still without internet and mobile services. The Universal Service initiative has already started with a project to cover 29 villages in partnership with Gabon Telecom, which is on track to bring coverage to the population by the end of the year.

Vodafone suspends internet connectivity in Cameroon

Following a directive issued by the Cameroon’s Telecommunications Regulatory Agency, Vodafone Cameroon has confirmed it has suspended its internet services in the country until further notice. Authorities in Cameroon are making moves to compel Vodafone to apply for its own license. Since it began operations in 2016, Vodafone had been using the license issued to Northwave SARl which was subsequently acquired by Afrimax Group to create Vodafone Cameroon. This arrangement, according to authorities, is illegal.
