Agriculture in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian economy is dominated by the agriculture sector which accounts for about 46 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) and represents up to 80% of total labor force and 84% of the country’s exports. Other activities such as processing, marketing and export of agricultural commodities rely on local agriculture. According to local authorities, agriculture is the leading sector in terms of contribution to the overall economic growth and development by supplying food for domestic consumption, raw materials for the domestic manufacturing industries and primary export commodities which constitute as high as 86% of the total foreign exchange earnings. The national economy, therefore, is highly correlated with the performance of the agricultural sector.

In collaboration with UNDP, the Ethiopian government has set up the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange to facilitate the trade of agricultural products, and enable both private sector and small farmers to actively participate in the exchanges. Another step made by the government to boost local economy through agriculture is the implementation of the Agricultural Development Led Industrialization strategy, ADLI. Since the program has been effective, Ethiopian households have experienced a decade of progress in well being, as ADLI emphasizes the importance of distinguishing agro-ecological zones and tailors strategies as well as interventions for optimal development outcomes.
