Avian Influenza Detected on a Cape Poultry Farm

The Western Cape Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a commercial layer poultry farm. Over 10,000 chickens have already died and culling of the rest at the farm and composting of mortalities has already been started. The farm has been placed under quarantine in the Western Cape.

45,000 tonnes of maize seed in stock in Zimbabwe

The industry has enough maize seed for the 2017-18 summer cropping season, with indications that over 45,000 tonnes are in stock. Zimbabwe suggested that it has 7,000 tonnes of soya bean seed, 2,500 tonnes of sorghum and 2,300 tonnes sugar beans but still has a problem with groundnuts seed. There is need to up production to 2,000 tonnes to be in line with national requirements.

Dangote, Niger State $450m sugar production MoU to revolutionise Nigerian agriculture

Dangote Group, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Niger State government to establish a $450m state-of-art and fully integrated sugar complex. The project will generate over 15,000 jobs in the state and bring about a complete economic turn-around for the state on completion.

Kenya partially lifts the ban on poultry imports from Uganda in wake of avian flu

Kenya will partially lift a ban on poultry products imported from neighbouring Uganda following recommendation of a taskforce that ascertained they were free from avian flu infection. Kenya will resume importation of poultry carcasses, eggs and day old chicks from three facilities in Uganda that have managed to contain spread of avian flu through establishment of stringent biosecurity measures.

Nigeria investor sets up $135 million commodities Exchange

A Nigerian startup is developing the first agricultural commodities exchange in Africa’s most populous country to take advantage of the government’s efforts to boost farming output to reduce reliance on oil. The exchange, Integrated Produce City Ltd., will be located near the southern city of Benin, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) east of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, a site accessible to nearby growers of cocoa, palm oil, rubber and cassava, Chief Executive Officer Pat Utomi said in an interview.

BoI Partners Oxfam To Disburse N200m For Farming

The Bank of Industry (BOI) has signed an agreement with OXFAM for the disbursement of Two Hundred Million Naira (N200, 000,000) to OXFAMs Village Saving and Loan Associations (VSLA) in Nassarawa, Benue and Plateau states. The funding was part of the Federal Government Enterprise and Empowerment Program (GEEP), aimed at strengthening the livelihoods capacity and resilience of poor households in rural communities.

South Korea is building a $10 billion agriculture city in Egypt

A $10 billion deal was signed by Egypt and the Korea-Arab Society (KAS). The project will feature 50,000 smart greenhouses in addition to a number of seawater desalination and solar power plants. The city will be located in the southeast part of the Qattara Depression, which is northwest of Egypt.

Tanzania promotes new rice farming system to mitigate climate change, boost food security

Tanzania has started a campaign to promote new farming system to fight the impact of climate change and to boost food security in the east African nation. The new system will raise rice output, increase farmer income, and strengthen crops` resilience to climate change, said Mary Majule, principal agriculture officer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, on Friday.

Saudi imposes temporary ban on poultry imports from Philippines, Laos over bird flu fears

Saudi Arabia has imposed a temporary ban on importing live birds, hatching eggs and chicks from the Philippines and Laos due to bird flu outbreaks. Sanad Al-Harbi, director general of the Animal Assessment Department of Saudi's Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, said the ban was based on a warning issued on Aug. 11 by World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on outbreaks of high virulent bird flu in the two countries.

$2bn worth aquaculture projects in pipeline in Oman

Oman's Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries is currently evaluating a raft of proposals for developing major aquaculture ventures in the Sultanate.
