Ebay To Sell More African Goods in U.S. as MallforAfrica Tie-Up Expands

The online marketplace eBay has expanded its partnership with MallforAfrica. As reported by TechCrunch, the new arrangement will see goods flow in the other direction: merchants in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Burundi are making their wares available through eBay’s U.S. website starting this week.

Ghana: Africa to become world’s largest consumer market by 2050

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen has said that based on the increasing population growth and fast rising middle-class, Africa is favourably positioned to become the world’s largest consumer market by 2050. The Trade Minister further urged African countries to take advantage of continental trade, as it has contributed to the growth of many economies in the world.

Ghana: Wilmar Africa to begin rice packaging

Officials of Wilmar Africa Limited (WAL) have disclosed that before the end of the year, they would begin packaging fortune rice, one of the most patronised perfumed rice brands in the country. Wilmar Africa is in the business of manufacturing, importing and distributing edible oil and packaged rice under main brands such as Frytol, Alffi and Fortune. It has set a production target of 58,075metric tonnes of the Fortune rice for this year and remains hopeful of achieving it before the turn of the year.

Jumia introduces Nigeria's first e-commerce bot

Jumia has launched Nigeria's first e-commerce bot, which allows shoppers to order goods and book hotels and flights simply by having an online conversation with the bot. Jumia Bot, which is powered and hosted by Facebook Messenger, offers Nigeria's 18 million Facebook users the ability to access their own personal Jumia shopping assistant.

Coca-Cola Nigeria to invest US$600m to boost sales, extend product range

Coca-Cola’s Nigerian operation will invest $600m by 2020 to boost sales, in line with a global strategy to extend the product range beyond its soft drinks. The unit of the Atlanta-based beverage maker plans to expand its offering of drinks to include flavoured and condensed milk, iced tea and bottled water to meet demand in Africa’s most populous country.

British American Tobacco invests N1 billion into Agric in Nigeria

Executive Director, British American Tobacco Nigerian Foundation, Ms Abimbola Okoya, has stated that the foundation has invested about N1 billion through agricultural projects in the country. Speaking at the presentation of relief materials to victims of flood in Benue State, Okoya explained that the organisation had supported 40 farmers with agricultural inputs, quality seeds, land preparation, access to finance and markets in Benue.

Carrefour to Open Hypermarket at the Thika Road Mall in Kenya

Carrefour Supermarket has announced it will open its third outlet in Kenya at the Thika Road Mall. The new hypermarket covers 5,000 square metres and will initially cover one floor with a projection of having full operations on both floors by mid-2018. The opening of the new branch at TRM will boost the staff employment count at Carrefour in Kenya to 800, with 600 already working at the other two branches located at The Hub in Karen and the Two Rivers Mall.

Unilever begins margarine sell-off in South Africa

Unilever has kicked off the long-awaited sale of its margarine division, which includes household brands Flora, Stork and Bertolli, by striking a deal in South Africa. The Anglo-Dutch group, which is rapidly trying to refashion itself in the wake of an aborted £115bn Kraft Heinz bid, has said it will take full control of its South African subsidiary from Remgro in exchange for handing over its spreads business and a cash payment.

Anheuser-Busch pledges to create 10,000 jobs in South Africa by 2021

South African Breweries (SAB), a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev in South Africa, on Monday unveiled an ambitious programme to create 10,000 jobs in South Africa by 2021. AB InBev which last year acquired SABMiller, a brewer with deep roots in South Africa said the jobs to be created would come from the company’s various entrepreneurship schemes such as SAB Kickstart, SAB Foundation, SAB Thrive and SAB Accelerator, as well as its agriculture programmes to grow emerging farmers.

Amazon expanding in Israel 

Amazon is expanding in Israel, setting up Alexa Shopping teams in two cities. The company will open research and development groups in Haifa and Tel Aviv with a total of 100 employees at the start, Globes reported. Alexa is a digital personal assistant developed by Amazon that allows users to shop online using voice commands.

McDonald’s Egypt to inject EGP 100m investments by 2018

McDonald's Egypt group, affiliated with the international company Manfoods, aims to invest around EGP 100m in 2018 to expand its branches in Egypt to 110 rather 97 branches currently. General Manager of McDonald’s Egypt Alaa Fathy said the company aims to achieve sales of EGP 1.6bn in 2018 compared to expected EGP 1.4bn by the end of 2017, an increase of 15%.

Noon.com now live in the UAE

Noon.com, the $1bn e-commerce joint venture founded by Mohamed Alabbar, is now live for customers in the UAE. The digital marketplace is a joint venture between Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and a group of prominent Gulf investors. With a large assortment of original products at launch through partnerships with local retailers, Noon offers customers in the UAE a selection of fashion brands and an extensive selection of baby products and homeware.
